The Story of Dacher Portuguese Water Dogs

David and Cheryl Smith have been breeding dogs since 1985 under the kennel prefix Dacher. We became interested in the Portuguese Water Dog (PWD) in the late 1980's after several years of breeding standard and miniature poodles. We wanted a medium-sized, nonshedding, hypoallergenic, highly intelligent dog. After more than a year of careful research we contacted Kathryn (Kitty) Braund and subsequently obtained our first PWD in 1987-Ch Roughrider Sunny Valla Dia "Woola". In 1988 we purchased our foundation bitch from Kitty, Ch Roughrider Sereia Anelada POM "Splash". Splash was Kitty's stud fee puppy from a beautiful litter bred by Marie West with the sire being Kitty's top producing male Ch Farmion Geo UD "Diver". Diver was bred by Deyanne Farrell Miller "the first lady of PWDs in the United States". She and her husband Herb are responsible for establishing the PWD in this country. Splash proved to be everything one could want in a foundation bitch She easily finished her championship and was campaigned for a short time as a special, achieving multiple Working Group placements and was a Top Ten PWD in 1990. However she made her place in our hearts and in PWD history as a mother.

Splash's first litter (Dacher's famous 'G' litter) born in 1990 was sired by Renee Reiherzer's top producer Ch Ilara Sardio "Sardi". This litter included four champions and a very special stud fee puppy: Ch Dacher's Gotta Get A Gund "Garbonzo", Ch Dacher's Pequena Garota "Ginza", Ch Dacher's Gulodice "Garbo", Ch Dacher's Gaia Criansa Do Rio UD "Rio" and Dacher's Gamba De Sardio "Gamba". Garbonzo, Ginza and Gamba flow through all our current pedigrees and through the pedigrees of many other kennels. These three PWDs are responsible for more than thirty champions and multiple other dogs with working titles. Garbonzo won multiple Working Groups and was a Top Ten PWD and won Awards of Merit at two consecutive PWDCA national specialties. Ginza finished her championship in a single four-day weekend and retired to the whelping box. She was bred to Multiple BIS Ch Rough Seas' First Buoy "Stormy Gremlin" and produced BIS Ch Dacher's Monsoon who was the number 1 PWD in the country and he also won back-to-back Awards of Merit at the PWDCA national specialty. Gamba was the stud fee puppy that went back to Renee Reiherzer and produced Ch De Leao's Unchained Melody CD "Whoopi". Whoopi in turn produced Multiple BIS, SBIS Ch De Leao's Amadeus of Kimlyn "Mo" the only PWD in the United States to ever win back-to-back Best in Shows (BIS). The 'G' litter produced the mother of the number one PWD in the country, the grandmother of a multiple BIS PWD, and a multiple group winning PWD as well as Rio one of the top obedience dogs in the country. Her second and final litter produced Ch Dacher's L'attitude "LA", Ch Dacher's Longitude "Turk" and Marie West's Ch Dacher's Lua Da Vierno "Lua". LA had multiple group placements and finished in the Top Ten in 1994. These seven champions in two litters qualified Splash as a Producer of Merit Award (POM) from the PWDCA.

Ginza was also bred to Ch Roughrider's Pescador de Toraq "Mickey" and produced Ch Dacher's Quintessence "Quincy" and Ch Dacher's Quite a Storm "Gail". Quincy produced Ch Dacher's Summer Squall "Savannah" and Ch Dacher's Starbuck "Java". Savannah bred to her second cousin BIS, SBIS Ch De Leao's Amadeus of Kimlyn "Mo" produced SBIS Ch Dacher's Braveheart "Gibson" and Dacher's Beyond Belief "Yawni". Gibson finished in the Top Five PWDs in 2005, won Best of Breed at the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Northern California (PWDCNC) specialty show in October 2005, and has received two consecutive Awards of Merit at the PWDCA in 2004 and 2005. He was an invited entrant for the Westminster Kennel Club in February 2006 in NYC. Gibson has been training with Cheryl in agility. His sister Yawni became the mother of our sixth generation of Dacher PWDs in 2005. That litter was sired by BIS, SBIS Ch Questar's Thunder and Lightning "Rascal". Rascal won BOB at the PWDCA national specialty in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The pick puppy from the Yawni/Rascal litter is our "Bud" Ch Dacher's Go for the Gold who has several Working Group placements in 2007.

Mo was also bred to Dacher's Quail Chaser "Crystal" a daughter of Ch Dacher's Vision of Grace "Gracie" and granddaughter of our Ch Dacher's Quite a Storm "Gale". This litter born in October 2003 produced Ch Dacher's Double Dare "Payden" and Ch Dacher's Nobreza Daredevil "Darby". Payden is the mother of our March 2008 (Double N) litter sired by Ch Aviators Anchors Aweigh. Her daughter from that litter "Nola" Ch Dacher's Nola de Nazare completed her championship in November 2009. A repeat breeding of Crystal and Mo born in October 2005 produced Ch Dacher's Fireworks and Freedom "Fiona", who was Winner's Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best Puppy in Show at the October 2006 PWDCNC specialty show and Ch Dacher's Force Five "Fresco". Ch Dacher's California Dreaming "Marley" was bred to Gibson in 2006. This litter our 20th PWD litter produced our first brown puppies. Ch Dacher's Hugo Chocolate Mousse "Mousse" owned by Norman Bogdanow finished in 2008 becoming Dacher's first brown champion. Mousse's sister "Lucy" Ch Dacher's St Lucia Islands Hoty co-owned with Liz Weidner also finished in 2008. A full listing of our champions and representative pictures may be found under our dogs.

Our primary goal is not to produce champions but to produce healthy dogs with good temperament that exude PWD breed type. We have strived to maintain the breed's working attitude and Dacher dogs have obtained multiple water, agility and obedience titles. Overall in twenty years of breeding PWDs we have produced 33 champions and have several pointed puppies out of our last several litters that are progressing towards their AKC championships.

Both David and Cheryl Smith have been members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (PWDCA) since 1988. Both have served on several committees of the PWDCA. Cheryl served as President of the PWDCA in 1997 and 1998 and was co-chairman of the PWDCA National Specialty in San Rafael, CA in 1994 and St. Louis, MO in 1996. Both David and Cheryl are charter and founding members of the Portuguese Water Dog Club of Northern California(PWDCNC) with Cheryl serving as the first President of the PWDCNC 1992 and 1993. Cheryl as served as co-chairman of the 2005 PWDCNC regional specialty held in Pleasanton in October. She currently is the Vice President of the PWDCNC. Cheryl served as President of the Del Monte Kennel Club (DMKC) our local all-breed kennel club on the Monterey Peninsula from 2004-2006. David has served on the Board of Directors of the DMKC. In 2005 we registered our kennel name Dacher with the American Kennel Club to protect that name. The AKC only grants a registered kennel name to breeders who have bred for many years.
